Vitamin K2 is much less known than other vitamins, only recently, research increasingly highlights its great importance, in particular, for the health of the heart, bones and brain, becoming a topic of continuous research and, consequently, a nutraceutical of great value in the clinical field and preventive medicine.
K2, or menaquinone, is a fat-soluble vitamin that is part of the vitamin K family. Vitamin K1, also known as phylloquinone, is found in plants and converted to vitamin K2 in the body. For this reason, this form is considered the least effective, since it depends on conversion into the 'more active' K2 form, to ensure significant action.
Then we have vitamin K2 MK-4, found in meat, eggs, and dairy products, and vitamin K2 MK-7, the most studied form of vitamin K to preserve cardiovascular and bone health. It is the most bioavailable, rapidly absorbed and metabolized by the body. This form of vitamin K is found in grass-feed meat (i.e. grass-fed, grazed) or fermented soybeans (natto) typical of Japanese food and fermented cheeses, making it quite difficult to find in our modern, Western diet.
