KARELA: NATURE'S GLYCEMIC CONTROL

Karela, known as bitter melon or bitter gourd offers a number of medicinal benefits and is a key herb in Ayurvedic medicine. Recent medical studies have indicated that Karela contains an 'insulin plant,' which helps lower blood sugar levels. The juice of the plant is useful in the treatment of alcohol-induced hepatotoxicity. Karela is a bitter tropical vegetable that is grown mainly in some Asian and African countries.

Componentes assets:

The fruit and seed of Karela contains a polypeptide, p-insulin, which is considered structurally and pharmacologically similar to bovine insulin. It is also rich in vitamins A and C, beta carotene, as well as minerals such as phosphorus, iron and potassium.

Main functions of the Karela

Antidiabetic: Karela helps maintain normal blood sugar levels with compounds called charantin and momordicin. Karela significantly reduces hyperglycemia, glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C Hb), total cholesterol levels and free fatty acid levels.

Insulinomimetic (insulin-like): Insulin is responsible for maintaining normal blood glucose levels. Karela, by its insulin-like action and by increasing insulin secretion, helps reduce excessive glucose levels. Karela also possesses antioxidant properties that help in reducing the risk of diabetic complications by scavenging free radicals.

Hepatoprotective: The fruit extract has been shown to significantly increase the enzymes glutathione active s-transferase, glutathione peroxidase and liver catalase, which suggest the hepatotoxicity-preventing role of Karela.

Lipid-lowering: Karela compounds improve lipid profiles. They reduce the secretion of apolipoprotein B and apolipoprotein C-III in the liver, which are lipoproteins present in 'bad' cholesterol (LDL) and increase apolipoprotein A-1, the main protein component of high-density cholesterol or 'good' cholesterol. It also reduces the content of cellular triglycerides. The fruits and seeds of Karela have been shown to reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

What is Ayurveda? It is the name of the traditional medicine of India and has as its common goal the unification of body-mind and spirit, proclaiming that disease and health are the result of the confluence of three main aspects of existence or doshas.

It hasbeen practiced in India for more than 5,000 years and uses mainly remedies of natural origin. Ayurveda has been recognized by the World Health Organization and little by little Western science is corroborating many of its recommendations.
